Types of Septic Systems

  1. IN-GROUND: This is the most simple type of wastewater system that exists. It can be either a bed or a trench design. In this type of leachfield, either a trench or bed is dug out of the sites existing soil. This is then filled with stone and the drainage pipe is laid through it. The trench or bed is covered with filter fabric and covered up with soil from the site.
  2. AT-GRADE: This type of leachfield is can be used instead of a mound system if the soil is to limited to a traditional in-ground system. It requires pressure distribution and some decent soil in the treatment area.
  3. MOUND: The mound system is used when the soil in the infiltration area is too limited to create either of the proceeding types of systems. It is most often pressurized, and requires special sand to be brought into the site to help filter the wastewater.
  4. BOTTOMLESS SAND FILTER: This is an interesting wastewater system that is quite different than the previously mentioned systems. In this type of system, wastewater is pumped up into a constructed box structure, and let to drain down through special sand that has been placed in the box. The wastewater is filtered through this sand before entering the native soils on site.
